Founded in 2005 in Burr Ridge Illinois, the Syrian American Council is the largest Syrian-American community organization in the United States. It serves to amplify the voice of the Syrian-American Community. SAC includes members from all segments of Syrian society, and has 19 chapters nationwide with thousands of members. It is an organization devoted to community organizing, media outreach, awareness-raising, youth empowerment, advocacy, and support for Syrians seeking to build a free and democratic Syria.
Since March 2011 and inspired by uprisings across the Arab world, millions of Syrians have taken to the streets to peacefully demand the end of the Assad family’s 40-year brutal regime and a transition to democracy. The Assad regime’s response to the peaceful, pro-democracy demands has been a full-scale military operation against unarmed civilians. After the revolution was militarized and opposition groups held up arms to defend themselves, the regime started using its air force to crush the rebellion.
The Syrian issue is a long term struggle and we must continue to do what we can to support the cause. In DC, we are fighting an uphill battle, but we can’t give up. Most recently, we helped organize an interfaith delegation from Syria to meet officials in DC resulting in a successful anti-ISIS PR campaign. We assisted Sheikh Yaqoubi to widely broadcast media interviews with Christiane Amanpour on CNN international, Margaret Warner on PBS Newshour, during which he denounced Assad and ISIS, benefiting the Syrian cause greatly. These projects defend the narrative of the Syrian people.
